Google+ hangouts (well the part that was called hangouts up until last week) work really well as a VC platform. I have a macbook at home that I use for work VC's with Chrome in full-screen mode.
I used to have a setup to run VC's off my work laptop in a thinkpad dock attached to my HDTV with a USB conference mic, didn't use an external camera but it worked really well, and VCing from the couch is hard to beat.
